Former Spectrum student Ryan Bernsten wrote a play which was just accepted into the Fringe Festival in NYC. Congrats Ryan, what an honor!
Congrats to Spectrum alum Katie Bell (far left). She is the 2016 Young Alumni Achievement Award recipient. Bell grew up in Rockford, Illinois, graduating from Knox in 2008 with a major in studio art and earning a master of fine arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. She works in Brooklyn, New York, where she was named one of "8 Great Brooklyn Artists Under 30" by "The L Magazine." A Message from the Education Director - Heather Psaltis
As the class of 2012 headed off to pursue post HS dreams and plans, I did some investigating this summer to see how our 13 students from the Spectrum Middle School Class of 2008 – who attended other area high schools – fared. Here is a snapshot of their class!
Jack A.: Jack was an Illinois State scholar who graduated magna cum laude. He took first place in tennis in the NIC 10 conference in the number two doubles spot his junior and senior years and was voted all-conference both years. He was awarded the Presidential scholarship to Augustana College where he is playing tennis this fall.
Joe B.: Joe is attending UW Madison this fall and will study to be an engineer. He graduated from Boylan High School as an Illinois State Scholar and has achieved honor roll status for all four years. He has been a member of the concert band for four years and was an integral part of reinstituting Boylan's drum line for the first time in 6 years. He has served as the secretary and president of concert band, and plays multiple instruments in addition to having his own band.
Nathan Davis attended Spectrum Progressive through middle school. Nathan’s parents are Sharon Nesbit – education and community engagement director for the Rockford Area Arts Council and George Davis, who is the executive director of the City of Rockford human services division.
Congratulations to Jon Carbone son of long-time Spectrum Teacher Carole Carbone and her husband, Nick. Jon attended Spectrum from ages three through Middle School and then attended Boylan High School, Beloit College and NYU. John has been working on his PhD in legal psychology in Miami, Florida at Florida International University. As of February, Jon has completed his coursework and passed his comprehensive written exams, so will be Dr. Carbone after he completes his dissertation. Florida International University is classified as a top-tier Research University with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.
