Congratulations to Jon Carbone son of long-time Spectrum Teacher Carole Carbone and her husband, Nick. Jon attended Spectrum from ages three through Middle School and then attended Boylan High School, Beloit College and NYU. John has been working on his PhD in legal psychology in Miami, Florida at Florida International University. As of February, Jon has completed his coursework and passed his comprehensive written exams, so will be Dr. Carbone after he completes his dissertation. Florida International University is classified as a top-tier Research University with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.
A recent published psychology paper, on which Jon was a contributing writer and researcher, was about jury members and their behavior and attention during long criminal trials. He will be teaching for the first time this summer at FIU as a professor of legal psychology. It is great to share about Jon not only because he is achieving his goals, but because he was not the most traditional of learners! Spectrum helped him discover what he needed to do to succeed and gave him the time developmentally to bloom at his own pace. Carole remembers that Jon spent a long time in middle elementary, finally noticing he was the oldest one in the class. He struggled to put a paragraph together for a long time, but can now write for long stretches. We think it is also Jon’s parents’ attitude that life is not a race and development comes in its own time. They obviously made Jon always feel that he was capable. Wow, has he blossomed! We know we’ll hear about it when Jon receives his PhD.
