What You Need to Know About the “Invest in Kids” Tax Credit Scholarship
Through the “Invest in Kids Act,” Illinois children who want to attend Spectrum Progressive School will have access to new scholarships. The scholarships offered through this program could cover up to 100 percent of tuition and eligible charges for next school year. Below is more information about how to apply, and if your family is eligible to receive a scholarship.
Tax credit scholarships: Students grades K-12 have the opportunity to receive tax credit scholarships in the 2018/2019 school year.
Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs): To apply for a tax credit scholarship, you will need to apply to a Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), a separate organization that is responsible for receiving and processing scholarship applications, and distributing the scholarships to eligible students.
Application Information: Spectrum School has chosen to work with the Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), Empower Illinois. Their website is https://empowerillinois.org/students. Scholarships are available on a first -come, first-served basis starting at noon on January 31, 2018, so it is very important that you apply early.
Application Check List
- A copy of your family’s 2016 federal tax return.
- Proof of Illinois residency, such as:
- Current driver license
- Current Utility Bill
- Documentation of the student’s age, such as:
- A copy of the student’s birth certificate
- Federal or State ID
- A Passport
Scholarship amount: Your family could receive a scholarship that covers 50 to 100 percent of tuition and eligible charges for next school year. Students who have defined special needs, are English Language Learners, or are classified as Gifted and Talented could receive a higher scholarship amount.
