Activities During School Hours
Music Education Services is in charge of the Spectrum Band Program. They have been established for 20 years and are based in Elmhurst, Illinois. Students are eligible to join band when they are nine years old. They start as Beginners, and then progress to Intermediate and Advanced, moving up to the next group after each year. Students become proficient in reading and performing all kinds of music, but most importantly, they learn that playing in band is fun and rewarding.
Individual and small group guitar is offered. Mike Kelly is the instructor.
The Student Council is made up of representatives from Early, Middle, Intermdiate, Upper Elementary and Middle School. Our goal is to participate in community and school service. The representatives take this very seriously and are proud to be on the Council.
Some past projects include fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, "Quarters for Kids" campaign to benefit the Burpee Museum and Discovery Center, and Hats/Mittens/Glove Drive for the children of Haskell School.
The Council also runs the School Store which is open every Wednesday and sells school supplies.
Activities After School
Chess Club is offered through our Compass Program after school.
Learn to play chess and improve your game in a fun, casual environment. Club members will play one another, learn some variations of chess, and solve chess problems together. Chess Club is offered to children ages 5 and up.
No Joke Martial Arts Instruction
No Joke Martial Arts instruction teaches basic self-defense, anger management, self control and the self-discipline that are all natural benefits of training in the martial arts. As an introductory course designed to determine a child's level of interest, each child will be challenged and encouraged while breaking boards, kicking targets and playing games to develop the balance and strength to master martial arts' moves. No Joke Martial Arts has been in business in Rockford since 2002.
Spectrum Progressive students have the opportunity to participate in sports through Rockford Lutheran's athletic program. The administration at Rockford Lutheran believes all children should have the opportunity to participate on a sports team and that every child on the team will get "playing" time.
