Applying to Spectrum PDF Print E-mail

Like our teaching methods, our enrollment process is individualized and hands-on. Our Open House events are great ways to learn about our school, but we also must learn about your child prior to offering admission.

Applying to Spectrum School

A. Application for Admission to Spectrum has three components:

1.  Application and Tour: Spectrum School believes that parents must visit a school and obtain information about the philosophy of the program and the educational methods in order to decide if the school is right for their child.  At Spectrum, this can be accomplished by attending our Open House or by making an appointment to tour.  After your visit, you will also receive an informational packet and application to complete. Please fill this application out completely and return for review. We also ask that parents and guardians provide the following educational information:
    - recent report cards and/or progress reports from the student's current school
    - any assessment information from the student’s current school( i.e. IEP, etc.)
This information and application must be completed and returned prior to the student’s assessment and classroom visit day.

2.  Student Visit and Assessment: Students ages 5, before September 1st, and older will be invited to visit the classroom with children of his/her age grouping for the day.  During this visit, the student will be informally assessed and observed by the classroom teachers and administered an academic screening by the Education Coordinator if appropriate.  There is a $50 fee for this assessment, due on the date of the visit. At this time we require any health information or any physical or health alerts or accommodations that are necessary.

Pre-Elementary students who will turn three after September 1st must have a classroom play day to ensure readiness and to determine acceptance. There will be no fee for this day. Acceptance will be based on the input of the Director and Education Coordinator together with the classroom teachers.

3.  Review of Application: All materials and information about a prospective student will be reviewed by the  Director and Education Coordinator together with input from the classroom teachers and timely contact will be made with the parents or guardians upon the completion of the visit and assessment day regarding acceptance.

B. Registration

Registration Deadlines
During the month of February Spectrum accepts registration for existing students and their siblings for our Fall programs.  Beginning the first business day in March at 9:00 a.m., new students who have been accepted may register on a first come, first served basis.  The full registration fee is due at registration.  A statement of tuition charges will be sent in May.

When levels fill to capacity, a waiting list will be established for those who have been accepted.  There is no guarantee that those on the waiting list will be placed into our Fall programs.

After July 1, any student whose parents have not completed all registration procedures will lose their space to a family on the waiting list.

Assessments and Testing

New students applying for enrollment in elementary and upper school level classes are assessed for acceptance based on personal learning needs and appropriate class placement.  The very nature of the program at Spectrum requires that teachers use both formal and informal methods of assessment throughout the entire academic year.  Standardized achievement tests are administered to individual students in certain specific situations, particularly with students 10 - 14 years old.

Full day students may receive assessments from Rockford Public School District 205, if referred by the teacher and Education Coordinator. Based on the results of the assessment, students may qualify for educational/support services.  Contact the Director or the School District for scheduling and other details.
