Middle Elementary has started our “soon to be famous” money unit! Students are provided a salary each day of $10. Students are able to earn bonuses or pay fines based on their actions and choices in the classroom. We will have 6 live auctions this year. Each student has an auction paddle and raises it when an item they want comes on the auction block. We have a live auctioneer that sells each item. The student then needs to go to the “bank”, and pay for the items. If they have money left, they can return to the auction to buy more items. We auction off many amazing items such as gum, pencils, notebooks, and other treasures that arrive from parent donations. In previous years, a pack of gum sold for over $75! We are excited to see what kinds of treasures the students buy this year! We feel this money unit is an important topic to cover. Paper money is rarely used anymore this day and age, and we have found that most children are not familiar with the coins and paper bills. This allows the children to take ownership in their own money and use it as they wish to buy what they want.
