Thinking, Creating, Reflecting: Impacting the Future

Letter from the Principal: Dec. 4, 2020

Dear Spectrum Families and Friends,

I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes Spectrum special. It is hard not to when I am blown away again and again by student projects and learning experiences.

I got a headhunter letter from a school in California very similar to Spectrum, started 10 years later than us. We have an educational twin!  I was struck by the school spirit, their sense of identity, and the sense of pride in the school. Of course when you get something like this, comparisons are inevitable, and I wondered about our students’ and parents’ sense of school pride and connection.

What does Spectrum mean to you? Where would your child be without Spectrum?

Thank you to the parents who have supported our GoFundMe campaign, A Race Against Uncertainty: Spectrum’s Journey to Stay Connected and Engaged. The fundraising target for this campaign looks high, but it truly is costing us about $1000 per student to stay safely open in-person with virtual programs where needed. Please share the campaign with friends and family this holiday season, asking for support for Spectrum School.

We are looking forward to our PTO Holiday Store next week. Please do not send cash or allow children to bring cash. We need payment or payment arrangements (on file with Marci) in advance. The form is attached to this newsletter This will be a highly managed event with only one or two students shopping at a time, and gift bags instead of wrapping paper.

I am also really excited about Ms. Sue’s efforts to put on a virtual holiday program. The Innovative Elves will air on Thursday evening, December 17. Please plan to enjoy as a family and send the link to loved ones. Sue’s creative and clever effort to do a winter music program in the COVID context will be spotlighted on NPR sometime this season. We will keep you posted.
